Andy Magazz is a bright star among the many young kwaito artists in South Africa.
The first single from that album Sen’khona was on every radio station. He later received nominations from the Metro FM Awards (Best Newcomer) and Channel O (Best Newcomer & Best Video).
Andy has always pushed to take Kwaito to new levels, so when the opportunity came to write and perform a Kwaito Rugby Anthem, he put his full energy into the project. “It’s always been my dream to take Kwaito to another level - and it’s not going to end here!” said Andy Magazz. “As a kid my favourite sports were tennis and soccer and I was definitely brought up to believe that rugby was for the big white guys and soccer was for blacks. I am proud to be part of an initiative that will hopefully break down these stereotypes and would like to see rugby and sport in general being more heavily promoted at school level.”
Andy was also commissioned to write an anthem for the Athens athletes in the Olympics.
And he has made an eventful return with his new album, Nofisa. The album features great tracks like Topnotch, Nofisa, Tsemonate, Gcwala, Step It Up and the afro pop inspired Ntomb’zodwa.
Producers include Psyfo, Nutty Nys and Bobby Johnson. Collaborations include Bravo, Mpilo, Psyfo, Lerato Moloi (from Muvhango).
Born in the Eastern Cape, Andy started developing an interest in music at the tender age of 11, messing around with his (musician) father’s horn. Following in his father’s footsteps, Andy became a composer and a choir conductor, singing in school competitions, weddings, and many other events. He was also a founder/lead dancer of Mount Frere Kwaito Dancers.
